Job Description:
Trim Carpenter Job Description
A carpenter is responsible for working with wood to build and repair structures and other items and they also may have to select and source appropriate materials depending on project needs. A trim carpenter, however, is responsible for, but not limited to, interior trim work on installing doors, chair rails, trimming out windows, crown molding, and other such related interior work.
Skills and Qualifications
- Installing cabinets, shelving, fitted furniture, some drywall and insulation
- Adding fixtures and fittings such as door handles, locks, hinges and closures
- Selecting lumber by size and strength to suit each job, sourcing wood to suit the customer’s budget and style
- Calculating the number of fasteners required for each job
- Liaising with clients, suppliers and other construction professionals
- Reading blueprints and designs to work to specifications prepared by other construction professionals, architects and building code recommendations
Education and Training
Carpenters usually need at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Most Carpenters complete an apprenticeship program where they can get practical training and classroom instruction. Carpenters can also complete specific programs at technical schools and colleges or earn a carpentry diploma, certificate or associate degree. They need to have a working knowledge of building codes and regulations, and some Carpenters specialize in a particular aspect of carpentry and gain specific qualifications in that skill. Education can be waived.
Experience
A Carpenter who has gained certification will have completed a set number of hours of experience. Most Carpenters gain experience through a variety of jobs, from small domestic repair and installations to working on construction sites building timber-framed structures and so will be able to work in a variety of settings. Some Carpenters specialize in a specific area, such as joinery or laying wood flooring, so experience in a specialty may be required for certain jobs. Three to five years of experience in related field. Will train the right person. 90-day probational period.

Project Manager
Position Summary:
Project Manager will ensure the crew is completing a project with quality, safety, and on schedule. Project Manager responsibilities include supervising the crew(s), planning pertaining to the project, and being the contact between workers and supervisors.
Management:
- Quality control

Specifics:
- Mark jobs active in Access

- Get JR to shop drawings if we are supplying
- Go over job with Foremen prior to the start of the job
- All change orders/all extras must be signed off prior to work performed
- Quality control on the job
- Walk thru the jobs at least once a week

- Schedule all deliveries (in-house too) for materials and receive if crews are not on the job yet
Estimator
Position Summary:
Estimators review plans and specifications, coordinate pricing with vendors, perform material and labor take-offs, complete scope of work bid sheets, meet with senior estimator and owner to review for the final bid amount, and assist project managers with submittals. This position gathers and inputs all necessary information to compile accurate estimates and written proposals, also assists with submittals.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- -Review plans and specs for scope of work
- -Assess any issues and submit RFIs, as needed
- -Perform material and Labor T.O. in Planswift
- -Review received vendor quotes scope of work
- (w SR. EST) For completeness
- -Use worksheets to build bid for received prices
- -Assemble information in order to pass on to project manager, if successful
GATHER INFO:
- Check through plans, addenda, and specs to identify unusual or questionable items
- Job site visits, if needed
- List out all potential RFIs on the RFI log
- List out all unusual items and send to suppliers for pricing
- Compile list of questions for GC while reading specs and plans
- Initiate phone calls with GC estimator to clarify discrepancies
- Record all information received from GC during estimating
- Determine material types and note on bid scope sheet
CALCULATE LABOR AND MATERIAL FOR PROJECT:
- Verify scopes from suppliers for comparison and completeness
- Enter pricing received from suppliers
- Complete scope sheet with material types
- Complete scope sheet with inclusions/exclusions
- Provide input on equipment needed and why
- Review all recent addendums to ensure we have the most recent info
- Ask GC for scope sheet (if available)
COMPLETE TAKEOFF:
- Input project into Planswift to perform material takeoff
- Read and interpret wall types for accurate takeoff
- Set up folders per floor in Planswift
- Create separate folders for items that need to be broken out/priced separately
- Apply appropriate cost codes to the correct takeoff items for labor units
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES & GUIDES:
- Attend and participate in project handoff meetings to QB operations team
- Attend and participate in periodic sales and staff meetings
- Suggest and implement any estimating improvements to enhance estimating
- Work with senior estimator to answer all post bid scope clarifications and questions from customer and QB project manager
- Do not initiate sales follow-up call unless directed
- Do not initiate contact with QB project manager unless directed
REVIEW JOB:
- Bring all special job considerations to owner’s attention as well as all
- assumptions made
- Review all labor calculation items
- Review all vendor pricing/scopes
- Set gross margin
- Review bid strategy and bidders list
- Record final price on scope sheet
- Record any breakouts/alternatives etc. on scope sheet
- Write up any project specific items/notes that were observed and save in project folder for operations
Drafter/Millwork
Position Summary:
The position of a drafter in the millwork division is one who is creative, self-motivated, and a problem solver. This individual needs to have good computer skills, have a positive attitude, possess good communication skills, and be open to taking direction from management.
Responsibilities:
- Experience in CAD / KCD Software
- Average or above Technical skills
- Ability to read and understand blueprints
- Understanding of construction terms
- Strong attention to detail
- Manages time well
- The ability to prioritize, multitask, problem solve, meet deadlines, and have strong math skills
- Able to work independently and meet deadlines
- Knowledge of different species of material/lumber
Other responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:
- Designing top quality complete and accurate drawings using different drafting software
- Create shop reports
- Create material lists, working along with the Shop Foreman
- Verify all necessary dimensions
- Collaborate with project PM on project specifics
- Present all potential RFI’s to PM prior to submitting to GC
- Present all RFI’s with thorough detail and possible alternate solution
- Request project specific info such as RO’s in a timely manner
- Attend weekly timeline meetings and participate in providing design timelines for specific projects
Shop Foreman
Position Summary:
The Shop Foreman will be in charge of the shop and lead several shop carpenters, direct the drafter, and work with PMs and Field Foremen. The shop personnel must be able to operate a nail gun, effectively use a tape measure, manipulate large pieces of wood, and operate various saws. The shop carpenter job exists to cut and prepare trim and other pieces of wood with efficiency, safety, quality, and good pace.
